The biggest concern regarding the UK housing crisis is that in a packed list of housing announcements in December 2019, ministers avoided any measures that would have had a real impact on the UK housing crisis. There were no house building targets. No mention of social housing. And perhaps most glaring given the election campaign pitch, no acknowledgement of the proposed surcharge on foreign buyers.
We believe there needs to be less glorification of power and money and more thought given to the wellbeing and needs of citizens. In parliament, Conservative ministers say they will deliver “hundreds of thousands of affordable homes”. We have been here before. In 2015, the Tory government promised to build 200,000 affordable homes. The National Audit Office found in 2019 that none had been built.
